Garcia Sisters Tanah Mayan Art Museum
Responsible for the revitalization of the art of Maya Slate Carving, the Garcia sisters offer a collection of limestone and slate statues for guests to view and even purchase. They also keep the Maya way of living alive through many classes and workshops.
Offerings
It all began when the sisters found a piece of slate in a field and were inspired to carve the rock into a whale. Although the tradition of slate carving had been lost since around 613 AD, the Garcia sisters say they found it within themselves to further the culture through this art form. Now guests can view an important part of the Maya heritage and even bring it home as a souvenir.
They offer a Maya cooking class, in which you will prepare many dishes. They will teach you how to make Mayan bolls, grind corn, bake tortillas, gather local eggs and chaya to make caldillo, and lastly, make Maya atoll or corn porridge. They also take visitors on the Edible and Medicinal tour, where you will learn about sacred plants, their uses and benefits, all guided by an authentic healer.
Learn about their healing traditions through many of their workshops. The Maya Sacred Ceremony is an intro class for beginners, where you will learn how to build a sacred altar. The Maya Blessing includes herbal tea, creating a sacred herb brush, and smudging, all to release negativity within yourselves. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to prepare herbal ointments or participate in a Deep Cleansing.
