Most of the visitors that come here are just passing through, Belize City is a transportation hub for all international and domestic flights, as well as the ferry that leaves from Ambergris and Caulker Cay. But Belize City has some hidden gems and nearby attractions that make the visit worthwhile.
There are two airports in Belize City. The Goldson International Airport is located on the outskirts of the town. The collective transport service or a taxi of approximately twenty minutes is the only option for transport from the center of Belize City. There are international and domestic flights departing from Goldson airport.
The Municipal airport is located on the seafront in Belize City and offers frequent flights to various destinations throughout the country. Domestic flights from the Municipal airport tend to be cheaper than those departing from the International Airport.
Beachfront, Belize City
Accommodation in Belize City ranges from cheap to more expensive hostels, such as major hotel chains such as the Radisson Hotel and Bitmore Hotel, which face the sea. Security and parking are things to consider when choosing a hotel in Belize City. Theft and other types of crimes are frequent in Belize City, especially at night, and it is generally not recommended to wander the streets after dark.
The Belize Zoo is approximately 45 minutes to one hour west of Belize City and is located on the Western Highway. It takes about 1 to 2 hours to tour the zoo, which is home to a variety of rehabilitated native wildlife.
Altun Ha is a Mayan ruin that is easy to access from Belize City. The ruins is a popular trip among cruise passengers, arriving early or in the afternoon, will ensure that no crowds are found. It takes about an hour to reach the ruins from Belize City, including a stretch of ballast road.
Visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary for a short and guided walk through a private nature reserve. On your way, you can meet a resident population of black howler monkeys. Located about 45 minutes to an hour from Belize City, this community-managed reserve contributes to the local economy and your visit can help ensure wildlife conservation.
