Begin with a 2.5-hour drive from San Ignacio to reach Caracol, an extensive archaeological site that was once home to over 150,000 inhabitants and contains more than 30,000 structures, including an astronomical observatory.
Explore the site with a guided tour that highlights Caracol’s unique history, hieroglyphic inscriptions, and diverse wildlife such as Keel-billed Motmots, Tapirs, Jaguars, Oscillated Turkeys, Gibnut (the “Royal Rat”), and Coatimundis.
Climb the temple pyramid Caana (Sky Temple), the tallest man-made building in Belize at nearly 135 feet. From the summit, enjoy expansive views of Belize and Guatemala.
