Description
Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary was Belize's first Ramsar site, recognized for its important wetland habitat supporting diverse waterfowl, including the Jabiru Stork during nesting and dry seasons.
The tour begins with pickup from the Port Terminal, water taxi terminal, or your hotel lobby in Belize City followed by a 30-mile drive north, passing rural communities to reach Altun Ha.
At Altun Ha, a Maya site dating from 200 BC to 900 AD, explore five major temples and numerous residential mounds set within a natural forest. Learn about the priestly tombs discovered here, which contained masks, stingray spines, flint tools, carved manatee bones, and ceremonial clay vessels used in ritual bloodletting.
Visit the Sun Temple, the site where the Jade Head was found. Climb to the temple summit to see the sacrificial altar. Afterwards, explore the onsite display center and gift shops offering replicas of Altun Ha’s findings.
